Do It Yourself

Location: Ann’s home atop Rose Mountain in Lansing, North Carolina
Featuring: Ann Rose

Being self-reliant and sustainable means learning to do everything yourself (instead of laying out hard earned cash for someone to do things for you). Ann Rose lives by herself atop a remote mountaintop for the last eight years, utilizing off-the-grid skills learned from her grandparents. “People are scared to live with less because they don’t know how to do anything with their hands except use a computer,” she says. “That’s why America’s relationship with its land and food is all wrong. Only farmers have a relationship that binds them to the earth. Those who don’t look to where their food comes from need to be educated. They must re-learn the value of independence, reliability, self-assuredness and freedom."

Ann grows all her vegetables throughout the year, including cold crops each winter (brussels sprout, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, and broccoli). She also raises her own meat (rabbits and pigs), which she harvests on the property. Ann cans and preserves food throughout the year. Ann’s water for both irrigation and drinking comes from the spring in a nearby pasture, and she collects rainwater to wash her dishes and laundry.
