Intercropping is the practice of planting crops in between row crops to maximize land use, and also to offer competition to weeds that might otherwise usurp excess water and nutrients. Intercropping using a cover crop mixture of legumes and grasses can increase soil organic matter, fumigate the soil, or break weed cycles and suppress weed growth. In addition, intercropping disrupts pest presence on the farm. Intercropping is a valuable practice for small-scale organic producers.
