Brownfields are abandoned, vacant, or underutilized commercial or industrial sites where past uses has resulted in significant contamination of the land. These sites are present in most of our communities and are a part of a toxic legacy left behind by irresponsible companies and governments who unable or unwilling to pay for the proper clean up to occur. With proper and adequate remediation and restoration, these sites can be either “redeveloped” for other commercial uses, or preferably transformed into community gathering places, affordable housing, farmers markets, libraries, parks, food forests, and urban wilds.
