This article discusses the beginnings of the National Organic Program standards, as well as the environmental and economic reasons behind transitioning a system of agriculture from conventional to organic. There are generally high costs and a lot of required time in order to transition a field from conventional to organic, making it rather difficult for many small farmers and producers.
