The Transition to Organic Farming

The Transition to Organic Farming

This article discusses the beginnings of the National Organic Program standards, as well as the environmental and economic reasons behind transitioning a system of agriculture from conventional to organic. There are generally high costs and a lot of required time in order to transition a field from conventional to organic, making it rather difficult for many small farmers and producers. The process of transitioning to organic agriculture take three years, which is necessary in order to ensure that the soil and the plants growing from it are free of any chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
