Harvest Public Media on Mobile Slaughter

Harvest Public Media on Mobile Slaughter

The mobile meat processing unit houses a USDA certified slaughterhouse inside a trailer, allowing for shorter distance and time from pasture to slaughterhouse for animals. A USDA inspector visits on a regular schedule, allowing the business owner to cut down on the cost of employing a full-time inspector. A mobile unit also helps the owner process the herd more efficiently and keep the meat as fresh as possible. This idea developed in Washington state in 2002, and has taken off nationally since then. The image here is of a mobile unit in Kansas; the side of the trailer says, “Rebuilding local processing one trailer at a time.”
