Definition of Prairie Pothole

Prairie potholes are wetlands, most often freshwater marshes, which can be found in the Upper Midwest, in states such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. These potholes may be temporary or permanent and, in spring, some fill with snowmelt and rain.
