Definition of Animal Feed

Feed is the single greatest input cost in any poultry operation. Conventionally, chicken diets are composed of corn and soy - the largest and cheapest supply of soy must cross the Pacific Ocean in tanker ships to reach farms here in America. As holistic approaches to farming practices persevere across the agricultural industry, organic feed has appeared. To minimize costs and food miles, farmers are considering what to feed their chickens and what their natural diet may look like: bugs, worms, and lots of grass. Mimicking what nature provides, organic feed encourages healthier, more robust chickens and eggs, and ultimately reduces input costs in feed.
